Cadets learn to survive and thrive outdoors
Jocelyn Burzuik Christopher Baril, 12, of Fisher Branch prepares for the hike to training sites in Lake St. Andrew Saturday. ?I took the picture because his pack was just as big as he was,? said Jocelyn Burzuik. ?But he was determined to carry it the entire way in and out and he did. We had a few that were just as small as he was and they all did great.? By Heather Robbins Members of the 158 Fisher and 220 Red River air cadet squadrons now have advanced winter survival skills thanks to training they undertook in Lake St. Andrew last weekend. Jocelyn Burzuik, the 158 Fisher cadet commander, says the aircrew survival exercise they shared with the Winnipeg squadron is considered one of the most in-depth and intense training programs in the region. ?Th is type of survival exercise is important for many reasons,? said Burzuik. ?It teaches cadets ages 12-19 basic survival skills they can use for almost any situation. Cadets gain the confidence to adapt to difficult situations and learn the importance of teamwork, setting goals, delegating, completing tasks and much more. Senior cadets are put in leadership roles that allow them to better understand how to motivate and instruct other cadets.? Th e cadets arrived at the Lake St. George Cadet Cabin on Friday to receive their survival gear and First Aid, personal safety and tool safety lectures. Continued on page 2 2010 AVEO 5 door air $

Lakeview subdivision bid rejected, again
Mayor sole supporter
By Jim Mosher GIMLI ? Against the backdrop of a contrary argument presented by Mayor Tammy Axelsson, council rejected a subdivision proposal from the owners of the Lakeview Resort and Conference Centre. Lakeview has made frequent requests to reconfigure its resort hotel on First Ave. in downtown Gimli. Usually the requests have been denied. And usually the outfit pushing to have these changes denied has been Neicom Development Inc., which owns the land on which the resort hotel portion of the development sits. This time around, Neicom supported the subdivision application from Lakeview. That was enough for Mayor Axelsson but not the council she leads. Council voted 4-1 to reject the subdivision application. Before the vote and after other members of council had said they would not support the application, the mayor mounted a last-ditch eff ort. ?Neicom, which has the largest vested interest, supports the application,? Axelsson said. ?I?m just trying to look at black-and-white facts, not be biased by the past. I don?t see the really, really bad negative to this.? But it would be that ?past? that clinched it for her council. Lakeview was seeking to separate its conference centre from the main body of the resort hotel. It wants to sell suites in this area as condominiums. In the past, Neicom consistently opposed any changes that could affect the resort hotel portion of the development. Neicom was satisfi ed that Lakeview?s latest application would not aff ect the resort hotel. Coun. Ross Bailey wasn?t so sure. He noted, in any event, that the latest subdivision application was exactly the same as one presented in July 2009. He opposed the original application.
